IV. HUMAN LIFE IS CONTROLLED BY THE UNIVERSE

IV. HUMAN LIFE IS CONTROLLED BY THE UNIVERSE

In the evening, we all arrive at the same time. The Meditation Master invites us to the bank of a shallow brook where many fine stones are scattered. It is quiet, and the mid-autumn weather brings in a fresh, cool breeze. We orderly circle around the Meditation Master.

The Master says, “Human life is controlled and nourished by the Universe and the Earth. What reasoning can we use to demonstrate the above statement? Please observe the Earth, on which there are many nations. Each nation has a language of its own. Even within one country, in each region and each province, one’s nature and behavior are affected by the customs of his or her residence. The accents and dialogue are different between each resident region, and the customs of nourishment and social behavior also vary, even they are in the same nation. Such a situation is called the local air and earth of each place.”

“Humankind lives on and is mostly affected by the Mother Earth. In a place or region where the earth is peaceful and fertile with green plants, the inhabitants’ lives are comfortable, plentiful, and healthy. On the other hand, in a place or region where the Earth is arid, the plants are exhausted and the inhabitants are starving, suffering, cruel, and lacking sentiment. The above illustrations reveal that the Universe controls human life and that the Earth provides human materials.”

“From these illustrations, we know that the Universe and the Earth decide the comfortable, plentiful, and leisurely lives of human beings. Millions and millions of years ago, the Universe and the Earth responded by metamorphosing and nourishing humans and all living creatures; later, however, they gradually subsided in that responsibility. Humans must reproduce by themselves, now. It is the same with plants and animals. Flowers and fruits are self-sown and grow. When humans and animals know that they are relying on the Universe and the Earth for nourishment, the Earth is tardy to be destroyed. When humans take pride in creating life and attempt to create a better life with modern technologies, the greater the suffering that humanity receives. Later, the Earth will be quickly destroyed.”

“Facing the situations of the Destruction and Vacuum Periods, how can humans avoid them? Humans are at the point where they should be self-reliant in order to have food, and being self-strengthening in order to be powerful and rich. Additionally, humanity is wisely and wildly developed, millions of times larger than in the previous period. Because of wild wisdom, humans do whatever it takes for advancement without thinking of the consequences for human living conditions. When the Earth is dry and cracked, engineering and science were born in order to support humanity, replacing manpower with machinery. However, the better the engineering is, the more efficient the weapons are. Why? Engineers explore mines underground to self-strengthen, become rich, and increase national resources. Once a country starts exploring, then all countries compete in exploration; if one country has its own wild and wise reasons, facts, and deceptive tricks, then hundreds of countries also have their own wild wisdom and deceptive tricks. It proceeds in such a way that countries manufacture advanced weapons even if they do not want to, in prevention of being conquered or invaded. Facing the problems in the Destruction and Vacuum Periods is no different from facing a storm. One only sees the immediate advantages without realizing the future harms; the richer and stronger that a country is, the more efficient its weapons are, and the more destructive the Earth becomes—but humankind doesn’t seem to realize that yet.”

“As for science, it aims at helping humankind, from making materials more abundant to raising the spirit and making civilization and culture developed, including improvement of human intelligence. Due to positive research and experimentation, science attained great knowledge of space and the Universe, discovering many different planets from its starting point. The objective of science is very noble. However, science still has a tendency to develop more advanced weaponry. It vigorously competes and improves, turning engineering marvels into weapons. It’s reached to the point that the development of nuclear power plants is now everywhere.”

“How tragic it is for humankind in the Destruction Period! The whole world unanimously intends to build a safe and happy life for humans, but the Destruction and Vacuum Periods do not let the world’s objective be achieved. The world plans in one direction, but it turns into another direction. The more humans try to improve the quality of life, the more suffering humans undergo. Is it true that human life is meant to be controlled by the Universe and nourished by the Earth? Facing the situation of the competitive improvement of science, many nations have to raise their concerns more than once, asking for the restriction of nuclear development. That’s enough to notice that humans have begun to worry about the total destruction of human existence. Humankind often massacres human beings; there must be one objective between the two.”

“You all should know that humans must rely on the Earth and the Universe for their living. One must behave in rhythm with the movement of the four Periods. The Earth, during the Formation and Residence Periods, is in its adoption stage. It is closely connected with humanity. During the Formation and Residence Periods, whether they want it or not, humans enjoy being friendly to everybody. They are very afraid of resentment, offense to others, and losing deep affection for one another. They often unite with those around them, valuing human sentiment and never doing anything to harm their relationships. They neither know how to get food and clothing by force and competition, nor suffer from serious disease; every word and every gesture is adopted.”

“All the different kinds of flower and fruit trees have in abundance the complete qualities in these Periods. Therefore, they nourish humankind, making humans healthy and increasing humans’ longevity. Toward the end of the Destruction and Vacuum Periods, flower and fruit trees are scarce and lack quality—one of its reasons was: the inner Earth loses most of its nutrients and ingredients because the Earth is hard and sterile. Food is adopted at the Formation and Residence Periods. Toward the Destruction and Vacuum Periods, it greatly decreases and is reduced in nutritional value to the point where humans no longer get food from nature. Humans have to transform substances and process food themselves. The Earth becomes as hard as stone. I tell you this so that you can fully comprehend: When the Earth and the Universe assume the responsibility, they nourish humankind; The more self-strengthening and self-reliant humans become, however, the less responsible the Earth becomes; When the Earth takes no more responsibility, humans must take on that responsibility themselves. If one was born in the Formation and Residence Periods but one’s mind and thoughts wants to lose sentiment and one’s actions are destructive, aiming to reach Destruction and Vacuum, it is impossible. Similarly, if a person who is born in the Destruction and Vacuum Periods wants to adopt and achieve exactly as the Formation and Residence Periods, it is also impossible.”

“These are my sincere words; they are not intended to please a negative humankind. I speak them in order to decrease competition among humankind and the worlds, using engineering to serve human living, and using intelligence and wisdom to show human affection. We should not use intelligence to nourish hundreds of doubts; this makes everyone suffer.”

As the Meditation Master says these words, He looks at the clouds that are lazily crossing in front of the residence. The breeze blows gently through the branches of leaves, the brook burbling softly above the poor pagoda, and our hearts are immersed with thoughts of the human Destruction and Vacuum Periods. On that early evening, the sky is blue and clear.

The Meditation Master continues. “Human situations constitute a mathematical problem that is hard to solve simply because wisdom is improperly applied and therefore spurs the world’s circumstances: a competition of ideology. Suppose that one side wins; what do they really get? In the present situation, a lot of people either want to stand still or stop, but they can’t because the Destruction and Vacuum periods are proceeding.”

“In terms of Buddhism and science, Buddhism knows how to utilize properly; one is aware of one’s own suffering oneself, and so dares not make anybody suffer. One knows that everyone is endowed with the same original nature impartially. However, inequality of form springs different castes. One is well aware that every human is endowed with all of the substances that are no different from the Universe. A human standing in the Universe is miniscule. If one can completely release specific elements and specific forms, then he or she becomes the master of the Universe. Therefore, a well-founded statement would be: ‘No matter how small a thing is, if it is properly utilized, it can be the biggest and greatest.’ For instance, let’s consider things from space particles to atoms—things unseen by our own physical eye, yet space metamorphoses the Universe and atoms destroy the world. Since the day when human science discovered atomic energy, humans simply knew that it had a powerful force that could destroy a huge region or disintegrate combined substances. Humans don’t truly realize that it was created in the present time of ruin and destruction of the Earth. This is to point out that humanity is coming into the place of the Destruction and Vacuum Doomsday.

“Buddhism takes a far-reaching and wide view of the Universe and humankind to its finish. It is Buddhism that builds the foundation for each human individual with completely enlightened intelligence. Buddhism leads humankind to the living place of immortality because humans are being metamorphosed. Buddhism fosters friendship among humankind because humans are trapped in errors of individuality and ego, with competition and doubt causing separation.

“Buddhism has thoroughly known about the inanimate objects lying underneath the Mother Earth’s surface, such as repositories of useful substances, such as coal, copper, and iron, which are mixed with space in order to make up the air that nourishes humanity and promotes human health. Doesn’t Buddhism help humans? Buddhism has long witnessed herbs and plants in desolate forests that keep on serving humans. Every morning, they expel breath that is entrusted with all of the substances mixed with space in order to make up the air. The plant forest air is an everlasting drug that saves humankind, recovering from diseases. Is Buddhism purely theoretical without helping humankind?”

“You all should also know that, if humanity correctly practices in accordance with the program of Buddhism, they can escape from the present birth. They do not need to reach to the moon or other planets in order to seek a new world. Science has long known that the Earth will be destroyed and void; it also believes that tomorrow will be a doomsday. Even if science discovers a new world on another planet and can bring humans there, it is not certain that humans could survive in such a new climate. Why? Because each planet is endowed with an atmospheric substance of its own, it would be hard for humans to live on another planet.”

At that moment, we all perceive the situation of Destruction and Vacuum. Human beings are living in the Destruction and Vacuum Periods. This is no different from all of humankind riding on a ship that is about to disintegrate, but they don’t notice it. They still go on dancing, yelling, fighting, and competing with one another. The more they do, the more seriously the ship cracks and breaks. We ourselves do not know how to say it better. We simply hope that humankind chooses to be safe by stopping the dancing, fighting, and competition.

We all bow and take leave of the Meditation Master, recalling that we have met the Meditation Master when the Meditation Master preached.

III. SPACE METAMORPHOSES THE UNIVERSE AND HUMANKIND

III. SPACE METAMORPHOSES THE UNIVERSE AND HUMANKIND

We arrive at the same time in the morning and see the Master sitting at the lower veranda beneath the apple tree in A Đề Garden, Vĩnh Ích village, Vạn Thuận hamlet, Tân Đảo settlement, Khánh Hòa province, later renamed Phú Khánh province. His residence is within a little forest that was explored about four years ago on the hill near the foot of the mountain. The front overlooks the sea, and the back is the Elephant Mountain. Although the landscape is incomplete, its beauty is not inferior to the beauty of nature. The Master, delighted with our presence, offers us mountain-made tea that is drinkable, though not very tasty.

The Master sits meditatively and appears to be in contemplation as we recall yesterday’s lessons. The Master says:

“As I have told you, the unstable specific element creates the acquired specific form. Seeing and knowing are not outside of the specific form, creating many disagreements in thoughts and forming thousands of different ways of living. One who absorbs and returns to uniformity with every nature’s seeds has gone through a process known as living beings’ salvation. In this moment, I begin to tell you: space metamorphoses the Universe along with humankind. The application of space’s nature varies with different regions. Please listen to me.”

As soon as the Meditation Master says these words, the young monk brings the tea in. The Master waves his hand and continues. “What is fundamental nature? Fundamental nature is the utmost complete immortal knowledge that is neither polluted, nor clinging to any specific area or ego. It is like the owner of a castle who has complete control of the castle, which is immortality without birth or beginning. The fundamental nature manages specific elements and form elements as well as space. Space creates its space form from itself, whereas the Universe and all species are being born.”

“Fundamental nature and space appears to be two, but they are really not two. Why? Fundamental nature does not change, whereas space constantly changes. Space has form, but it has no state; it has nature together with substance, forming the essential nature of space. Let’s take the viewpoint of humankind in the solar system to explain this more clearly. The nature of space is a pressing nature. When something has achieved its shape, for example, a rock or plank of iron, it is placed in space with the intention of avoiding the rotation of the Earth or the planets. Because of the pressing force, the rock or the plank of iron stands still in space for a certain time and then is naturally annihilated. Because of the pressing nature, the Earth is not round but egg-shaped; such a remark shows that space has a pressing nature.”

“Looking up to space, it has its form and substance of hollow space. That hollow substance metamorphoses itself and is not being metamorphosed. For example, in the solar system or in the Universe, when a planet reaches its end and explodes, after the explosion, its explosive force is immediately affected by the pressing force of space, turning into tiny dust and then empty dust; it is then assimilated into space and metamorphosed from space. There is no case in which the exploded planet is immediately re-metamorphosed when it retains its form. When space metamorphoses a planet, the planet takes its shape from tiny dust. Space nourishes it until its time limit expires and it is bound to be destroyed.”

“As far as space metamorphosing the Universe is concerned, it varies with each region. For example, in the case of its metamorphosis in the region of fine substances, the substances of fine essence are metamorphosed into the planes. The rough place is formed from the rough substances, the fire place is formed from the fire substances, and the water place is formed from the water substances.”

“In this solar system, the Earth represents the solid substance, the Sun represents the fire substance, the Moon represents the water substance, and space represents the hollow substance. Each planet, depending on its substances and has its own representative to form its system. Only the species that is superior to the Universe represents the constitution of consciousness. Hearing, seeing, and knowing are the roots of fundamental nature. However, species are subjected to metamorphosis in the Universe. They are mistakenly taking specific forms bound to the birth and death regulations. Therefore, they shall rely on air and fine air to breathe, and the provisions of each plane, land, and place, with the Earth as an example.”

We, the listeners, unanimously stand up and respectfully ask, “Master, space metamorphoses the Universe, the Earth, and all of the species; how does it metamorphose? Which species is born first? We beg you to explain this.”

The Meditation Master answers: “As I have just expressed previously, when the Universe and all of the species are integral and have not been formed yet, they can be corrected and transformed. On the other hand, when they possess form, they must have their own roots and branches. It is exactly as when you are thinking or planning something. For instance, when you plan to build a house, you can alter the plan and change the design with different dimensions. Once the house takes its shape or form, it’s difficult to make major changes; you would need to break it down to build another house. Space must have its space form, the Earth has its Earth form, the sun has its sun form, and the moon has its moon form. It is the same for all of the species: each species has its own form. Forms must have their longevity, so it is said that ‘Forms have their own determined regulations.’ Therefore, the Saints say, ‘When one possesses an ill thought, if one does not express it, he or she does no harm; when one possesses an ill thought and expresses it, it is somewhat harmful, but it is rather than he or she does not put it into action. As one possesses an ill thought and puts it into one’s action, he or she is definitely evil.’”

“Speaking of space, it is a general warehouse, storing all substances and natures along with hearing, seeing, and knowing. Since species are not capable of mutual empathy yet, it is said that space has no knowledge. In reality, space is naturally endowed with hearing, seeing, and knowing. It is also conceived that space has neither fire nor light. On the contrary, when an engineer makes a power generator, he or she adopts space to emit light and make fire. If scientists can create a robot with all of the necessary parts, it is natural that the robot has knowledge and behaves not unlikely as a metamorphosed human would. If you understand my words, then you will believe that space metamorphoses the Universe and all of the species. On the contrary, if you are not convinced by my words yet, then you will find it difficult to believe them to be true.”

As the Meditation Master speaks these words, he seems to put added emphasis on them for our attention. He states: “Listen to me, gentlemen. First of all, space metamorphoses the Universe, or, if the Universe already exists, it sets up and metamorphoses the solar system. Then space must have a starting point, moving in a great expanse. Space metamorphoses the dimly white substance. With time, the dimly white substance gives birth to tiny space dust. Both the dimly white substance and the tiny space dust already has all substances along with hearing and knowing. However, secular eyes of specific form cannot see that.

“During that time, the tiny space dust makes itself into a visible white color. Its nature is very active, making it move and circulate within the achieved dimly white circle. When it is congested, its living body is much stronger and performs a circular rotation. In this manner, it makes a circle of rotation. When the tiny space dust makes up a big mass, the inside is congested and is called tiny dust, while the outside keeps on forming and nourishing. When it becomes solid, it is immediately affected by the pressure of space, which makes the rotation much stronger.”

“It is hard to estimate the number of years from the starting point of a small motion, to creating tiny space dust, to the time that it achieves an oriented rotation, but until there is congested liquid on its surface area like a cloud of fog encircling the Earth, it must take eight hundred million (800,000,000) years as one unit of space time. When the outer layer is solid, the inner layer is hard and has attractive force, there inhale and exhale air called breath, and its core has heat from the rotation. In that case, the estimated number of years must be increased by eight hundred million years (800,000,000) as well.”

“These two add up to one billion six hundred million (1,600,000,000) years. It’s estimated that it takes another one billion six hundred million years (1,600,000,000) before the outside becomes more solid and the inside has a substance that is harder than diamond. This substance has enough attractive force birthed by space. Therefore, it has an extremely heat-resistant substance, which is hard to describe. So, from the starting point until this stage, it has taken a total of four units of space time, equal to three billion two hundred million (3,200,000,000) years.”

The Meditation Master stops and takes a sip of tea, meaning for us to take the time to recall and ponder what he just has told us. The Meditation Master then continues. “As far as the Earth is concerned, it has four stages. Each stage has four units of space time. Each unit of space time lasts for eight hundred million years. The first stage is called the Formation Period. The second stage is called the Residence Period. The third stage is called the Destruction Period. The fourth stage is called the Vacuum Period. In each stage, humans live in different ways. For that reason, humanity relies on the Earth for living rather than on itself. Humanity affects and relates to the Universe in the same way that a fish affects and relates to water.”

“In the Earth Formation Period, humankind and all of the species begin their metamorphosis. The sun and the moon also make their appearance in this Period. The sun and the moon appear after the three rhythms of the Earth, which take two billion four hundred million (2,400,000,000) years. Why do the sun and the moon appear later than the Earth? Because the heat of the Earth constitutes the sun, and coolness is provided to the moon. That’s why their appearance is rather later.”

We are very surprised at hearing these words. The Meditation Master seems to be aware of what is in our minds. He smiles and reminds us, “You should know that each land or plane has its own species as its center. For example, the Divine Plane is presided over by the divine species. The Earth is presided over by humans. This solar system is presided over by the Earth, whereas the sun, the moon, and space are taken as supplements to nourish and support the Earth. For that reason, the constituted Earth is supplied with a liquid that is denser than the tiny space dust. When its center is hard and has a rotating orbit, it is affected by the pressure of space. This pressure is favorable to the Earth in two aspects. First, it provides the Earth with a moving force that allows the Earth to rotate strongly, and the strong rotation gives rise to heat at the center of the Earth. Second, due to the heat, there is an attractive substance of space, which is absorbing tiny dusts constituting the outer cover. The more rotations of the Earth, the more absorption and emission of the Earth’s gas there is. At a certain speed, the heat rises strongly at a considerable height. The heat is drawn into the orbit. The heat that rises above the orbit is known as the fire space dust. It is not subjected to the Earth, making an up-road in space to the upper layer, immediately touching space and becoming the orbit line, which resembles the Earth’s rotation. In the constituting time, it is called the Sun.”

Upon these words, The Meditation Master notices that we don’t quite understand yet. He restates His point as follows: “What is the fire space dust? The fire space dust is the heat emitted from the center of the Earth. At that time, no sunlight is yet seen from the Earth. The heat is emitted, touches the orbit, and then rises up and expands 3000 meters around in the air. Half of it is attracted to the Earth making the Earth temperate, and the remaining half rises above the orbit, making a sphere, and rises to the upper layer, where the sun becomes apparent.”

“The fire space dust sphere moves through space heading to the upper layer. You should remember that the inside of the sphere pertains to the fire space dust, and the outside of the sphere is pushed downward by the pressing nature of space and becomes the cool substance known as fine space dust. It runs strongly down to the end of the sphere of the fire space dust, making a sphere in the opposite direction such that it also collides with space, becoming an orbit rotation and constituting the apparent moon.”

“When the three masses take shape, as far as the substances are concerned, there is mutual integration and nourishment between them in the Earth. Each has its own livelihood of absorption and release. The sun presides over the fire air. The moon presides over the fine air; the Earth presides over the air. As far as the planets in the solar system are concerned, each planet has a chief substance of its own. Space is active and lively because the sun, the moon, the Earth, and lots of other planets that rotate together in it. If there is neither planet nor Earth nor sun nor moon in it, space is not living and active. Such liveliness of space creates a governing gas, which is a substance that covers the solar system and becomes the frontier of a plane. No matter how advanced human technology becomes, it cannot surpass the governing gas’s circular lines.”

“I shall now tell you how human beings and living creatures undergo metamorphosis and clearly explain the four periods of the Earth: Formation, Residence, Destruction, and Vacuum. Human life is more rhythmic due to the influence of the Earth than it would be if humans were self-reliant. When the Earth begins to be destroyed, as it is about to be destroyed, how does the human living standard change? Please listen to me carefully.”

The Meditation Master explains, “In the beginning, when the Earth has just formed from the hollow substance of tiny space dust, seeds of all of the species and humans already existed in it. Why? This is because fundamental nature is all-embracing and is present at the space substances level. Today, the space substances metamorphose into thousands and thousands of different shapes, forms, and colors, all of which already exist in the space substances. If they do not pre-exist, their forms would never be shown. This is like how an orange seed includes an orange tree in itself. Secular eyes, dharma eyes, and Divine eyes can’t perceive space substances; only the eyes of contemplative intelligence of Buddhism can see them. Buddhist contemplative-intelligent eyes see humans, in the beginning, conceived as an egg wavily flying above the Earth. When reaching 12 years, one’s body is hatched out and is 2 meters, 60 centimeters tall. When one is first hatched out, one flies like a swimming fish. One’s knowledge is very poor, one’s longevity is as long as 10,000 years each lifetime, and one’s provision is living air. At this time, humankind was metamorphosed and the Universe was nourished by the Earth’s releasing air, which was plentiful and rich of nutrients; thus, longevity was very high. The more congested and the harder the Earth became, the more human longevity decreased. Each mountain was formed from the breath of the Earth, with the motion of the Earth causing the high or low configuration. Tiny space dust combined to become tiny dust, which was transformed into grains of sand: all of this was caused by the heat and coldness of the fire space dust, it then similarly metamorphosed into stone on the Earth. There are countless similar combinations and similar metamorphoses.”

“As stated above, the Earth undergoes four periods. Each period lasts for four units of space time. Each unit of space time lasts for eight hundred million (800,000,000) years. The first period is called by the Formation Period. The second period is called by the Residence Period. The third period is called by the Destruction Period. The fourth period is called by the Vacuum Period. The total longevity of the Earth is twelve billion eight hundred million (12,800,000,000) years.”

“During the Formation Period of the Earth, human knowledge was very poor. It was even inferior to that of the living animals of the Destruction Period. People did not yet know how to have sexual intercourse. Humans only used what the Earth metamorphosed. Since metamorphoses are rare and infrequent, they did not know what death was. Toward the end of the Formation Period, humankind started to use a solid, milk-like substance that was emitted by the Earth. At that time, humans began to lower, walk, stand, fly, and run on the Earth.”

“At the beginning of the Residence Period, human longevity decreased to eight thousand (8,000) years each lifetime. Human knowledge was still poor; they only knew their residence, using only materials emitted by the Earth. They were very carefree, innocent, and they enjoy each other in the human sentiment; later, they naturally learned how to recognize the feminine and masculine genders. They made groups, being mutually happy and very friendly. As far as the sexes are concerned, they were naturally friendly to one another. They missed one another when they were far apart; they flew and ran to find each other. Later, they lived with one another and treated each other as wife and husband. That was the beginning of the Residence Period.”

“At the Residence Period of the Earth, there were plants, fruit trees, and landscapes. Humans began to reproduce by themselves, still being conceived in the ovary. Humans did not fly anymore. Their living standard was excellent and leisurely. They did not think privately or have any notion of ownership, as in, ‘This tree is yours and that land is mine.’ The fruits contained lots of vitamins and nutrients, being very long-beneficial. For instance, a ginseng root could support human health for up to one hundred years and a fruit could be nutritious for as long as two or three years. Each kind of food was nutritious for a very long time. Each fruit was substantially high in nutrition value due to fertile soil, and the emitting air was plentiful. Therefore, human longevity was high.”

“The Period of Residence was not a compulsory one. It did not have any way of organization. It did not know any kind of theft or resentment. Humans were generous in sharing food with one another; they liked to be next to each other and help one another in many different ways, entertaining each other by talking, gathering, dancing, and clapping their hands. Later on in this period, they began to know how to keep fruits for themselves and to plant their own trees, and thus they needed their own people to take care of these private properties. Human longevity then decreased to six thousand (6,000) years. This decrease resulted from the lack of nutrient-rich air from the Earth. Human longevity gradually decreased with the passage of time until, in the Destruction Period, it is not many years for a lifetime.

“This period that we now live in is known as the Destruction Period. This period began very long ago; these days are not the beginning of the Destruction Period.

In fact, the Destruction Period dates from the time when tribes or institutions were formed and kings or chiefs governed the people. The Destruction Period is characterized by degradation. At the beginning, this degradation is small. Over a period of time, it becomes very large. It has the same progress as how space metamorphoses the Universe: at the beginning, it originates very small from space, then it takes its initial shape as the tiny space dust, then becomes the tiny dust before finally becoming the Universe. This is the same as the beginning of the Destruction Period.”

“The Destruction Period brought human self-strengthening and self-reliance in order to earn one’s living. Every time a king or chief begins to govern, they set up many chess games of the world’s situations, hoping to bring better life to all. However, the living standard of the current Destruction Period is neither superior nor inferior to the transitional time between the Destruction and Vacuum Periods.”

“In the Destruction Period, human intelligence is superior to that of the Formation and Residence Periods. This period produced Saint’s beings, Fairy beings, and super human beings in order to show a way to escape life. That’s why humankind aspire to practice and act the Tao dharma, aiming to escape from the sorrows and pains of the human world, and to avoid the place of ruin and destruction. During this Destruction Period, knowlegeable people are very fearful; they concentrate their efforts on cultivating fields of good fortune and virtuous natures, aiming to safeguard their lives, and dissolve resentment and competition, due to this period often causing unexpected accidents and injustices.”

“There are many reasons and facts that cause millions of people throughout the world to worry about birth and death. They vow to help one another, showing each other first how to escape from sorrows and pains, and second, how to bring harmony and safety to humankind. From kings and chiefs to heads of state, they all guide their people.”

“How ironic and pathetic the Destruction Period is! The more humans worry, the unhappier humans become. The more efficient the drugs they find, the more serious the diseases they cause. Many super humans and Saint’s beings who have solutions for humankind are pushed into isolation. On the other hand, those who bring nothing to other people are claiming themselves powerful, and are authorized. Meanwhile, clairvoyant and authentically bright people who relax the human mind and body are rare.”

Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC)

The Meditation Master completes these words, silently looking at us, contemplating what more can be done for humankind during the Destruction and Vacuum Periods. Then the Master continues: “Please think of my words. In any given period, Saints come into being and great people are born, yet few people listen to them, so later they must quietly leave. Simply because of the Destruction Period, the human body and mind are full of confusion and doubt. One doesn’t know where the destination of his or her life is. On account of that, the great person or Saint’s being leaves some sutras for living advice or showing humankind the right way. There was a period when Confucius was placed at the rank of super human. He showed many appropriate ways of behavior for every class and level, and his words were welcomed by many people. In this period, even though humans are made feeble by following his guidance, they know how to preserve their roots in virtuous nature. When he saw that people were puzzled by the question, ‘Who creates humankind?’, Confucius said, ‘The heaven creates humankind, and the Earth produces grass.’ This is the same as I tell you today, ‘Space metamorphoses the Universe and humankind.’ I do not rely on Confucius’ thesis, I just reaffirm what that wise sage said. It’s also a fact, which shows that the words I say today are true.”

“Through many generations, super people, great people, Saint’s beings, and the incarnated Buddha have come into life. Unfortunately, they are slowly forgotten over time by the following generations, but their footprints are still left in the human heart. The one who wants to achieve in his or her lifetime as a human being always improves, but he or she always acknowledges and treasures a wise sage’s precious advice. You should also remember that a heap of rubbish is dirty, but it is still useful as fertilizer for rice. So how can we throw away a wise sage’s words? The Destruction Period is the governing one that was long-established and became the familiar system of humankind. It must proceed in each human stage. At the beginning, animals know how to eat animal flesh, with the big animal eating the small one; then, humans catch animals to eat their flesh. Later on, humans eat human flesh. That is the time of ruin and destruction, when exploitation, cruelty, and oppression increase as people compete for each other’s flesh to eat.”

“When the Founding Master Buddha[1] was incarnated in India, India had two distinct castes: the ruling caste (King and Mandarin) and the slave caste. The ruling caste did not literally eat the slave caste’s flesh, but they did eat the slave caste’s vitality through slavish lifetimes.”

“The Buddha applied a dissolving procedure to destroy these two castes so that they became equal. At the same time, the Buddha brought truth to all people as a torch that self-lit the way to achieving the immortal life.”

As the Meditation Master completes these words, it is near high noon, time for a regular lunch. We have to say goodbye and leave. The Meditation Master leads us to the gate. We ask for His permission to return in the evening, and the Meditation Master nods in agreement.

WHY DOES SIMILAR NATURE ALLOW SIMULTANEOUS SEEING?

WHY DOES SIMILAR NATURE ALLOW SIMULTANEOUS SEEING?

“Your whole body is endowed with all the natures and substances, from Buddha’s nature to those of Fairies, Deities, Saints, Monks, and Nuns, or from Supreme Being to Demons and Animals. All of the natures and the substances that exist in the Universe also exist in you.

“On account of these natures and substances, there are three different levels of seeing. The first level of seeing is that of humanity. A person sees himself or herself as born, and his or her living standard is surrounded by situation. Next is the practitioner in Buddhism named as the conducted Bodhisattva or the vowed Bodhisattva who sees himself or herself erroneously in thousands of dharmas. His or her living standard is encircled by thousands of dharmas, from the inner mind to the outer environment. As for the third, Buddha’s seeing, all are Buddhas, conducted and vowed Bodhisattvas who are serving the movement and management of Tathagata. For them, there is neither situation nor thousands of dharmas. In the three above levels of seeing, each individual or rank sees differently although they live together simply because of similar nature similar seeing, or similar situation immediately leading to seeing.

“Those with differing natures and situations have difficulty understanding one another. Beings with similar combinations of natures, hearing-seeing-knowing are unified. On the other hand, a lack of similarity gives rise to opposition in every way. It gives rise to the ongoing living scene: people are happy when they are united, yet they remain indifferent and live in expectation when they are not united. Not being united, they see themselves as opposite or unreasonable, and it proceeds accordingly.

“Similar nature leads to similar seeing, and the lack of similar combination is a lack of metamorphosis. Sometimes, this difficult-to-understand situation occurs: some practitioners who have achieved the natures and substances of Fairy and Deity immediately witness Fairies and Deities. They then tell others who want to witness these, but they can’t because they are not of the same combination. Some people experience seeing ghosts or phantoms because their natures and substances often harmonize with the natures and elements of phantoms. Because of being inclined to achieve similar combinations, the authentic Buddhist practitioner fulfills the four integrations: he or she should somehow manage to correspond with all of the classes. This is called similar metamorphosis with all human beings. Thanks to this process, a practitioner accomplishes the penetration through the Tathagata constitution, becoming consciously aware of the Universe along with human beings and thus becoming enlightened.

“You should remember this: a lack of constitution of similar natures and substances divides a country. This is also true of friends and families that often quarrel. Their relationships are not built as friendly, peaceful, and happy yet. It’s only because their natures are not similar and their substances are not in combination yet; thus, they do not achieve mutual sympathy.”

The Meditation Master ponders for few seconds, then continues. “The practice based upon nature and substance leads to the dharma subject of emersion from contemplation. When one’s nature is pure, one speaks finely. One’s behavior is decent. One’s mind is clear and liberated. When one can master co-adaptation, then one leads himself or herself to the nature and substances that create the form of Fairy-Class. As for the Deity-Class: One is upright, generous, magnanimous, and one’s character is impartial, but does not lose one’s fine substances. When one can master co-adaptation, then one leads himself or herself to the nature and substances that create the form of Deity-Class. As for the Phantom-Class to the Human-Class: this is when one’s character is strange and indecisive; he or she wants to be weird and different. After the co-adaptation, he or she becomes of the Phantom-Class. With morality, gratitude, politeness, intelligence, trustworthiness, or behavior in accord with humanity, one does not have to practice, he or she will still reincarnate in the human world.”

“You should know that the conformity of natures and substances in the specific form is very easy. One just has to combine this substance with another to have a new substance. As far as the specific elements of human thoughts are concerned, one should know how to behave and treat one another in order to create unified metamorphosis. It is rare for people to become harmonized naturally or automatically. Therefore, it is almost impossible to find a best friend in the world. In conducted Tao, it’s difficult to find ones who know how to absorb natures and substances to integrate all kinds of people. The practitioner in sitting meditation who trains himself or herself to obtain emersion through contemplation, strolling along all of the planes, should manage similar substance compatible metamorphosis to gain the respect of the Human Species, Divine Species, and Fairy Species. At this point, he or she can emerge from contemplation to move in and out of the lands and planes. If one is being imaginary, practicing sitting meditation creates spiritual consciousness, or fruit, as food to relieve one’s body, aiming to emerge through contemplation. That is only an illusory practice.”

At that, we all unanimously and respectfully inquire, “Master, we don’t fully understand yet. You have said previously that the Fairy Planes and Divine Lands can’t communicate with one another because of the border separations. No matter how great their supernatural power is, they find it hard to know each other. And now you say similar combination similar seeing, are Fairies and Deities real in that sighting? Or do they see through fixed thought? Master, please explain it to us.”

Hearing our words, the Meditation Master smiles while answering, “I congratulate you for your undivided attention and questions on this useful matter for this age and the following age to comprehend. I shall say sincere things to add to your knowledge. Later, they will be brightly and correctly affirmed.”

The Meditation Master immediately continues, “Seeing and knowing Fairies and Deities are real or unreal depending on the witness’ level. For instance, the one who completely releases his or her specific elements totally acquires fundamental nature, which is well-refined without sediment, perfectly transparent and all-embracing, and this one meets Fairies and Deities or moves in and out of planes. These are very true and real, not erroneous at all. On the other hand, one who does not completely release one’s specific element, one whose mind is still doubtful and whose will is still confused, resides in fixed-thought sight and knowledge. Therefore, when this one has met Fairies or Deities or moved in and out of planes, it is still in fixed-thought and is not real.”

“Furthermore, Fairies and Deities have taken on the metamorphosed fixed form in the planes of Fairies and Deities. It is the same for the Saints or the Heaven Lands as well. Fixed form is obviously fixed body and mind, which is eighty percent subjected to the limits of that Plane. The remaining twenty percent is liberated and free by oneself without any obligation. The individual 80% limit is caused by that individual tying him or herself to sorrowful thoughts or illusory expectation. He or she is certainly not different from all of you who are residing in this world.”

“Be thankful for the twenty percent that is unlike the preference of the plane where one is residing. That twenty percent becomes a driving force for all to practice, training and nourishing fine and liberated specific elements or releasing specific elements and aiming at absorbing fundamental nature, according to the need or  individual vow to be accomplished. That is known as escaping birth or liberation from the birth-death transmigration through solving. If one does not know how to take advantage of that twenty percent opportunity toward liberation from birth, one remains worried, complaintive, sad, sufferable, bringing oneself to ruin. After death, one has to be depraved. That is why, from planes and lands to the human world, they only grasp their bodies, wealth, and possessions—never their own thoughts of liberation through solving. They must create those solving-liberation thoughts by themselves. It is like treasure, which is really theirs.

“When one has pure fundamental nature without sediment—one hundred percent of fundamental nature, the Eight Great Elements of Nirvana—one then can move in and out of planes. Wherever one happens to be, he or she simply incarnates exactly as an Inhabitant who behaves uniformly with the plane or land and is not erroneous at all. The one who obtains eighty percent of fundamental nature still remains naturally calm, but sometimes does not resemble an Inhabitant exactly and is less self-assured in each present moment than the previous one. A person who obtains sixty percent of fundamental nature is, of course, inferior to the previous one. It proceeds in the same way in order to show how clearly, or not so clearly, this is. Depending on the amount of specific element of effortful deeds, it is found to be real or not so real. When an ordinary person suddenly meets or sees a Fairy or Deity in a dream, this is derived from the fact that he or she used to have a good nature. At some point when those natures arise, meeting a Fairy or Deity automatically happens in a dream. What I have stated above is a well-grounded and bright confirmation; you should release the specific element as long as you are still entangled in this human world. If you realize twenty percent of your released asset, you should take my advice to start releasing that specific element so that body and mind are both fine and liberated. Human ties are not important, but self-binding is extremely important. It’s not important whether one is rich or poor, happy or unhappy, but it is very important when one is burdened with vague hopes and despair.”

Glancing at us, the Meditation Master notices our attention, He nods and continues. “Everything, whether it’s worldly or out of this human world, has an objective and proof. It has a starting point, and then, an ending point; it does not reach perfection naturally and automatically. Those who want to improve their conscious level and increase their level of seeing and knowing must release wrongful thoughts, and observe the minds and thoughts of their relatives and friends or those around them. First is to learn and second is to absorb, aiming at similar combinations and similar metamorphosis— that is salvation for living beings. In front of one’s presence, one should behave in such a way that corresponds to the spirit of others. That is difficult. Furthermore, if one helps them to adapt, that is much more difficult. Such ones are known as Saints.”

Patriarch Bodhidharma

“The similar combination and similar metamorphosis between Holy Monks and Humans is a tremendous task. Such a task is tenfold harder than making a scientific recording machine. Patriarch Bodhidharma[1] attempted to help King Wu of Liang[2] with the Supreme Precious Dharma. It was impossible for the King to truly comprehend the Supreme Precious Dharma at that time. As a result, the patriarch was facing toward the mountain for nine years only because of a saying. Some sayings are difficult to listen to and understand, but when one can listen and comprehend those words, it’s really precious. To help your knowledge at this time, I will present from the human point of view how space metamorphoses the Universe and humankind.”

As the Meditation Master speaks these words, we notice that it is going to be dark soon and therefore take our leave, making an appointment for the next day.

II. WHEN THE MEDITATION MASTER PREACHES

II. WHEN THE MEDITATION MASTER PREACHES

The Meditation Master says, “I really understand well; I witness thoroughly, brightly, and accurately. The circulation of each lifetime metamorphoses into thousands of ways in one lifetime. Still, each lifetime dissolves and returns to its original fundamental nature in one lifetime. How wonderful! How lively! From the time that our parents give birth to us, we live in the born specific forms and the specific elements of passive knowledge. We tend to rely on our secular eyes, our human brain of limited intelligence in order to walk, stand, lie down, and sit in a limited way. When our living standard does not meet our demands and we find it unsatisfactory, we start to seek the process of releasing the specific elements of thoughts and training to absorb the fundamental nature’s self-enlightenment to return to us as a recording apparatus without polluted habits. It successively changes along with the demand, ability, or utmost efforts achieved by our training. Once seeing, hearing, and knowing in turn alter; they will be successively transformed as we completely embrace and comprehensively understand thousands of dharmas. When our whole body is completely original fundamental nature, we ourselves often ponder in wonderment. How wonderful! How lively! Unexpectedly, on account of what we expressed previously, there is nothing entangled. There is no habitual or customary defilement. We can then go in and out of planes and stroll along the lands. There is nothing strange, nothing spectacular. In spite of that, humankind desires, earnestly reaching for the Fairies’ Lands or Deities’ Lands. That’s really useless.”

As the Meditation Master says, “Human beings don’t understand it at all.” We simultaneously stand up and respectfully inquire, “Master, what is the born specific form? What is passive knowledge’s specific element? What is the benefit of the original fundamental nature? Master moves in and out of the planes and lands without habitual defilement. Do planes and lands really exist? If they do exist, where do they come from? We beg Master to explain this to us so that we might understand without a doubt, as we now doubt and consider that it is just a theory.” The questions subside, and we all sit down on one side.

The Meditation Master smiles, answering, “You should know that all of the things in the Universe, from humanity to Fairies and Dragons to lands, mountains, and rivers, live with born specific form. Because of being born, you know only when you witness; you will not know without witnessing the planes. Therefore, your knowledge is not outside of the specific form. On account of that, progression of human civilization is not outside of material and usable objects. Human living standards are not outside of food and happiness. When a person does not have enough food and happiness, his or her living standard is decreased; he or she becomes unhappy and wishful. On account of being wishful and wanting a better life, one naturally ponders and reckons, creating specific elements. The specific element stands on the spiritual side; its original nature is very comfortable. On the other hand, it is also full of sorrow and depravity. As it is comfortable, it creates fine substance. As it is sorrowful, it makes up humid substance and is led into Hell and the way of Animals. It is the origin of moving when it doesn’t take a definite direction. When it takes a definite direction, it is the specific form of material or plane, so we label it as thought, which gives birth to action. It is, therefore, the mother of specific forms. On account of that, we use contemplation to pray to Buddha or believe in the Savior. It is the process of nourishing the specific element of thought to grow into a form later, in the hope that one will escape from life to meet the clairvoyant Lord or return to Buddha’s land. This process only relieves one from hardship and sadness in this world. However, we do not integrally master ourselves. Why? Because specific element and specific form are both mixed natures. It is an instinct of formation-destruction metamorphosis and not yet natural reality.

“When one wants to release unreal mixtures—specific elements and special forms—one needs to practice and live in specific form without desire for specific form. In initiating each thought, one must aim to be aware of thought’s specific element of rooted-karma, fetter-karma. This involves knowing all complicated, fine and liberated, and constituted thoughts comprehensively and thoroughly without predetermined opposition, without being conservative, without fear, without hesitation, and without avoidance; all of these are called self-assurance’s Intelligence in every present moment. That way of practicing is called absorbing the fundamental nature. The fundamental nature is immortal and yet without beginning, managing all of the errors until the present time in the birth-death cycle of always relying on born specific form and specific element (which is initially born and destroyed). Therefore, hearing, seeing, and knowing are still entangled in the dharma precept’s circle.

“The specific form and specific element, when known, are unlimited and tangible dharma precept: formless but usually giving birth, precept-less but with habitual acts, detached but fixed, without regions but dreaming of Nirvana, and without attestation but with self-pride. In reality, they are infinite shapes and forms; specific elements and specific forms bring so many imaginations to humanity, turning into the Universe of three thousand worlds. In this world and the planes and lands outside of it, all are entangled in the specific forms and all have been metamorphosed and born in such a way. On account of that knowledge, the mind is not hesitant, the thought is doubtless, and the heart is not oscillating. As a result, the original fundamental nature engenders the Eight Great Elements of Nirvana, otherwise known as all of the Buddhas. The engendering base is neither causeless nor natural. That is just the way it originally is.”

We immediately and respectfully ask, “Master, from what we were told and understand, specific elements initially give birth to the formation of specific forms, metamorphosing along with the proceeding Universe to the Lands of Fairies and Deities. Since space has its form of space, is fundamental nature already in the layer of space or in space? What is space’s essential nature? Please, Master, explain to us.”

The Meditation Master answers, “You have asked this and have grasped my words, so please listen to me. Space and fundamental nature are still close to each other, inseparable. It is the same case as how you are originally endowed with fundamental nature. When you know how to properly utilize the specific element, it will become your own guiding light. If you know how to properly utilize specific form, it will become your own Nirvana. On the other hand, if you don’t know how to utilize it yet, you should eagerly obtain it. However, it only satisfies your immediate needs, never making you comfortable. When you’re no longer in need, it immediately disintegrates. Why? That’s its essence and nature.

“Speaking of the essential nature of space, it is very lively. It supplies the needs in accordance to each region. In one region, it metamorphoses into the planes along with the Universe of the planets in the solar system. In another region, it supplies the consequence of reward or punishment. It has many different ways and means to meet whatever the needs are. For instance: pure lands, pure countries, and the Eight Great Elements of Nirvana are really innumerable.

“You should also know that space is the richest. Why? It fully provides for all of the needed places. If there is one who is restoratively enlightened in the original fundamental nature, space will immediately respond and fully supply the exact needs of the true enlightened one of the Eight Great Elements of Nirvana. As for Divine Planes, space provides supplies that match with the class of Devas. In the Fairies’ Planes, space supplies exactly to the spirit of the Fairies’ Planes. As for Heaven’s Planes, space meets the exact requirement of Heaven’s Planes. In human worlds, space still provides supplies in correspondence to the demands of the human worlds.

“The recipience and enjoyment of fortunes vary with the place, the caste, and the country. Some places treasure crystals and pearls as precious objects. Other places use amber as precious objects, and some use jade and agate as precious objects. Humanity uses gold, silver, and other rare metals as precious objects. Their values vary, but their usage remains the same. Every place in all the Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds are formed from the combinations of space; there is no place that is labeled as metamorphosis by itself. We ourselves can only dissolve our own errors, which are attached to us, until we attain enlightenment and return to fundamental nature.

“You should also know that each plane has a definite frontier. In each plane, there are many different species, and each species has its own nature. The separation of borders resembles our solar system. From the Heaven Land to the Fairy Plane or the Deity’s Land to the human world, they can neither see nor enter into one another. Why? Because separated karma and separated planes bring about separated seeing. With the exception of beings that have liberated into a new life where practice at one place is metamorphosed into another, this land can’t reach that plane. Humans often conceive that Heaven’s Land or Divine Fairies, the Deity’s Land, or the Saint’s Land is a place where they are entrusted with supernatural power, and that they can go up and down and in and out or come down to our world for salvation. These beliefs are errors, originating either from superstition, usual expectation, or simply a lack of comprehensive and thorough understanding, thus becoming such an impressive thought.”

As the Meditation Master stops speaking, we simultaneously stand up and respectfully state, “Master, your words are puzzling. First of all, some Tao practitioners have already met Fairies, Deities, and Saints. Why did Master say that we can never reach them? Secondly, since Fairies and Devas find it hard to meet one another, except through metamorphosis to the others’ land, why did Master say that Master used to visit these lands and planes? When Master goes there, do the Devas or Fairies know that Master comes from the human world?”

The Meditation Master nods, saying, “Please, listen as I explain.” As we sit quietly, the Meditation Master continues: “The seeing or meeting is rendered through similar nature, similar seeing, or similar nature metamorphosing into seeing. Buddhism states, ‘Only the same karmas see, and when the karmas are separated, the seeing and meeting disappear.’”

2. WHAT ARE THE FIVE WAYS OF SEEING THE BUDDHISTIC FUNDAMENTAL NATURE?

2. WHAT ARE THE FIVE WAYS OF SEEING THE BUDDHISTIC FUNDAMENTAL NATURE?

The first way of seeing is through the physical eye. The physical eye has the same function for all ordinary people with sight, and is not outside of the specific form.

The second way of seeing is with the dharma eye. The dharma eye’s sight is vast and boundless. It embraces all of the species and things in the Universe, including mountains, rivers, and continents, and all of these pertain to the specific form and belong to thousands of dharmas’ metamorphoses. As for the aspects of thought (fixed thought, reflective thought, directed thought, etc.), they are called specific elements and are all thousands of dharmas. Thousands of dharmas affect every person. What is perceived through hearing, seeing, and knowing are also thousands of dharmas. In this regard, a single substance can be transformed into thousands and thousands of end substances, including endless space and thousands of accomplished forms. All of these belong to thousands of dharmas. This is the reason for Buddhism saying, “One essence is metamorphosed into thousands of dharmas.”

As an example: One kind of flour could be made into thousands and thousands of different types of bread or cake. Their shapes, additional ingredients, and tastes are all different, but their substance is still flour. Humans and the Universe are not outside of the fundamental nature. The fundamental nature is transformed into mountains, rivers, and continents, and all the things in the Universe. All of these are called dharma.

Humans in general use the physical eye to observe. Buddhism utilizes the dharma eye to become acutely aware. For this reason, every limited thing, every object, every gesture, and every movement cannot be fully understood by the physical eye. On the contrary, the dharma eye fully perceives it. The physical eye can only see the surface, whereas the dharma eye can see the core. The physical eye sees a cake by its shape. Therefore, study and experimentation are needed to know the ingredients and the method of baking if one has never encountered this type of cake before. In other words, a person who can make thousands of different cakes with physical eyes has already learned about every one of them. In contrast, a person with dharma eyes just has to look and know clearly and thoroughly without experimentation.

Buddhism relies solely on fundamental nature to release the thoughts of specific elements and to be self-aware of thousands of dharmas. Owing to releasing thoughts, reflective thoughts, fixed thoughts, dreamy thoughts, and false expectations, the conclusion is reached that all previous elements give rise to unpractical life and acts. Thus, how can one obtain thorough knowledge?

When one acquires dharma eyes, one perceives the true form of reality. First, it is a look at other people’s thoughts. Later, it is an examination of our own thoughts, seeing the relationship between the polluted thoughts of specific elements and their effects on habitual acts. What are our own actions? Do our words and actions match? If yes, why do they match? If not, then why not? What are our predetermined habits? What are our habitual acts? How are these acts polluted? If the answers to these questions are transparent, one will thoroughly know the movements of thousands of dharmas and completely understand the movements of the unstable mind and how it is initiated in all people. At this point, there is no need to closely examine the specific form or fabricate theory in the mind; one fully comprehends the reasons and facts of the initial mind of every person as well as every other species and completely understands the correlation between actions and thoughts. When this level of understanding is reached, the individual path forward (after the current lifetime) is clearly defined, which is a reward or punishment, based upon the merits acquired during one’s lifetime of thoughts and actions.

The one who can truly see with dharma eyes is the one who has performed the conduct, vow, and practice sincerely. His or her thoughts are clear of preserving individuality, thought, and self-karma. This one understands the motion of thousands of dharmas with a mind that is not entangled, obstructed, or involved with anger, resentment, hatred, or love. His or her nature is impartial, yet inclined to help others and save unhappy people. Seeing with dharma eyes means leaving the greedy mind and its unreal reputations. One’s mind is not being attracted by expectation and praise for wealth, nor is it immersed in the specific form. If someone is aware of thousands of dharmas and yet his or her mind is still immersed in thousands of dharmas, he or she is not attested as having the dharma eye. This is important to remember.

The complete dharma eye immediately attests to the divine eye. The vision of the divine eye is that of the third level. It is a comprehensive way of seeing the Universe and Devas as well as the Three Thousand Great Thousand Worlds[1]. Furthermore, one with the divine eye is clearly aware of which seeds of natures and specific elements of thoughts took root to become the formation of the lands and planes without error. Those with the divine eye can see the acts and way of king-life of Devas as clearly as seeing a sweetsop (sugar apple) that is sitting in front of them. With this knowledge, the mind does not desire to become a Deva or Fairy. Why? The answer is that Devas and Fairies are not outside of thousands of dharmas. Ordinary people build their living worlds in specific forms, while Devas and Fairies create fine forms as a residence for Fairies and Deities. This Universe houses thousands of planes and lands. Each plane and each land is administered by a species. Each plane establishes its main characteristic as its main nature. For example:

  • This solar system is inhabited and administered by humans and houses many different species that coexist in the Earth. Together, they take Earth as their main nature and are influenced by the Earth’s nature. All of the materials for living are supplied by the Earth.
  • There are eighteen planes that make up the Heaven’s Land. They adopt the fine substance of fire as their main nature, nobility, generosity and administration as precepts, authority as law, and indulgent luxury as a way of living.
  • Outside of the Heaven’s Land is the Fairy Plane, which is made of three levels: Divine Fairies, Plane Fairies, and Earth Fairies. They use fine substance as their main nature, regions to establish precepts, supernatural powers as law, and nobility and tolerance as a way of living.
  • There are countless planes and lands, including those of Hungry Ghosts, Animals, and Hell, which hold starvation, lust, and austerity as their main natures. Because these three ways specialize in killing and lust’s Tao, they use killing along with lust’s Tao as their mind.

Each plane or land houses millions and millions of Divine species and Fairy species. Their levels of consciousness are different, but they are divided into classes that are not different from humankind on Earth. The living standard and way of life is uniform on each plane, but different from that of every other plane. This is the same as for people living in different countries or regions. Each country has its own customs and living standards; regardless, the Earth houses all human beings.

The fourth way of seeing is with the eye of contemplative Intelligence of Buddhism. The Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eye is generated from fundamental nature. It functions as a spotlight. How so? It embraces the three previous ways of seeing. As its nature and essence are impartial, all human beings and animals are born with it; however, each species has different capabilities and different ways of gaining knowledge. When a person sees and reflectively thinks in order to gain knowledge, it is called intellectual knowledge. What people acquire through teachings is also called intellectual knowledge. What people acquire through research and experimentation to expand their understanding is known as contemplative knowledge. What a person knows instinctively is called contemplative intelligence. Comprehensive learning through many progressive consciousnesses is called awake intelligence. The awake-intelligent person knows how to light up every place, immediately allowing him or her to develop what is called seeing knowledge.

Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eyes are omnipercipient. The person who is not heavily greedy in the specific form or individuality can acquire contemplative intelligence of Buddhism easily. From the human world’s viewpoint, each person develops contemplative intelligence of Buddhism in proportion to his or her level of consciousness and capability. Since individuals vary in the ability to gain contemplative intelligence of Buddhism, some are viewed as intelligent, and some are not. The truth is that we all have fundamental nature within ourselves. In the case of too many specific elements of illusory thoughts, ignorance is created, obscuring Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eyes. This is why each person should practice through many levels to ultimately acquire Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eyes. The ones who do not recognize the self-enlightenment of the Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eye and use passive knowledge to see clearly, only see and know the specific element and specific form.

The majority of educated intellectuals do not believe something simply from hearing it. They only believe something when it is shown to them. Due to this, their belief belongs to the belief of the specific form. The specific form usually relates to illusion rather than the self-confidence of the fundamental nature. When the believer practices and gains the fundamental nature belief, belief in specific elements and specific form is eliminated. This results in gaining seeing and knowing. Science is highly based in the specific forms and the specific elements of thoughts, so scientists find it difficult to realize the fundamental nature.

The fifth way of seeing is through the Buddha eye. The Buddha eye is omnipercipient and impartial. No one has the ability to be aware of it, except the Buddhas, and thus there is no discussion about it.

When we speak of science, we think of it as a whole. Science is divided into many branches. Each branch includes specialists who research and experiment in their own fields. For instance, in scientific medicine, each doctor specializes in his or her own field. This is why a scientist’s knowledge is limited to a certain field of study. This situation is like how one kind of flour could make a hundred different cakes or breads and how different shops specialize in each kind of cake or bread.

As far as Buddhism is concerned, authentic practitioners learn to self-subdue uncontrollable characteristics and self-pride, aiming to acquire natural characteristics to release unworthy, wishful thoughts, which are polluted specific elements that have been inherited in their bodies and minds. They tend to re-evaluate their thoughts in order to be more aware of them. When the awareness is clear, they begin to absorb the fundamental nature. The process of accumulating fundamental nature is the most important one in Buddhism. When this process is completed, which means that the fundamental nature is completely absorbed, authentic enlightenment is achieved. This is similar to the process of cleaning a pearl that is accidentally coated with dirty substances, oil, and other substances, which are dimming its illumination.

In examining Buddhism from the outside, one might see Buddhism as passive or as simply an exercise in controlled mind. Someone with this perception does not understand Buddhism at all. As one steps deeply inside of Buddhism, one admits that Buddhism is extremely active. True Buddhist practitioners are willing to forgo and control their own desires, to release ambition, selfishness, and egotism. They are willing to bear hardships without harming others. They dare to advise cruel people and actively encourage others toward good deeds to form a pure land for humanity, providing a means to escape an extremely difficult road nearly taken, and aims to restore fundamental nature.

As far as simply controlling the mind process, Buddhism does not emphasize mind only. Nor does it consist solely of physical practice. Buddhism usually exhorts: “You should vow and truly fulfill your own vow in order to be completely enlightened; not because of your work, being immersed in what you are doing.” Imagine a person who is trying to level a mountain. If this person tries to rely on physical strength alone to do it, it will be a very difficult task. A person must utilize his or her intelligence. With intelligence, one can accomplish any work. If you desire to eliminate ignorance, you should utilize effort to understand ignorance. If you only use effort without an understanding of ignorance, the harder you try, the greater your ignorance becomes. The fact is that Buddhism also utilizes physical works in order to be clearly aware, but this is not the same as being immersed in physical practice.

The practice of solely relying on mind is related to fanaticism. Buddhism fully understands this and says, “On account of the unsettled mind, humans are immersed in illusory reputation. As the mind entertains wishful thoughts, humans become greedy, dishonest, and evil. The mind is the horse that carries the specific elements of our usual thoughts, which are trapping humanity. However, humans are closely attached to the mind and therefore subject themselves to the birth and death karma.”

Buddhism aims at conquering and controlling the mind until the true nature of the mind is obtained, which means that the mind is completely managed and one is fully aware of the mind’s behavior. That is called clairvoyant mind. Once clairvoyant mind is acquired completely, it should be thrown away in order for one’s mind to become smooth and to reach full enlightenment, which is called without mind. So, does Buddhism exclusively specialize in mind?

Buddhism is a self-strengthening religion that emphasizes correcting oneself and practicing the body and mind to become a recording apparatus to communicate and exchange with the Universe to solve the birth and death problem. From the vantage point of the physical eye, the sight of all places and things is passive seeing. Passive seeing never truly sees. It should, therefore, release each covered thought, each layer of color, to create a pair of eyes that surpasses the passive seeing to actively and actually see. This is known as the dharma eye. Once the dharma eye is obtained, the dharma challenge is much greater than before. The inner mind and the outward appearance are not entangled and become smooth without taking up the karma of thousands of dharmas. This leads to acquiring divine eyes. Seeing with divine eyes, one will know the planes and lands are created by fixed-thoughts’ karma seeds, and are filtered by specific elements of thoughts to become specific forms of fine dharmas. This is not very different from humanity. It has longevity, but when the limit is reached, it decays and passes. The acquisition of divine eyes is obviously superior to that of dharma eyes. The person with divine eyes is fully aware that his or her seeing and knowing is nonetheless limited. Therefore, this person is not entangled with dreamy, confused, and insane thoughts and thus truly acquires the Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eye. Buddhist contemplative intelligence’s eyes fully see and comprehend the reasons for each being’s transmigration in each lifetime. They clearly see the movement of the characteristics—Human Creature, Divine Creature, Fairy Creature, Animal, Hungry Ghost, and Hell. This becomes as clear as examining one’s own hand and seeing all of the fine lines and cracks in the palm as well as the hand itself.

It is a unique situation when Buddhism talks about science in our day. These words are bright and confirming statements, recapitulating the complete attestation of the three generations of Buddhas, which is handed down to increase human knowledge or to pave the way to liberation through knowing, seeing, and solving of humanity in the current and future generations.

The knowledge of Buddhism, from hearing to seeing (through the five ways of seeing mentioned above) to knowing, is never wrong for those who have completely acquired the fundamental nature. This is a noteworthy statement. Now, let’s listen to the words of the Meditation Master.

1. WHY CAN’T SCIENCE BE AWARE OF BUDDHISM?

  1. WHY CAN’T SCIENCE BE AWARE OF BUDDHISM?

Scientists examine reality from the point of view of a specific form. They look for outcomes that are physical, concrete, and repeatable. One example is a chemist who analyzes and blends one substance with another to create a new material. Science continues with this process until the final result is the anticipated, predictable, and desired outcome. Science adopts the eyesight method in order to know and accept; in other words, one will not know without witnessing it themselves. This is called experimentation with specific forms.

Buddhism utilizes and focuses on the fundamental nature that is not handled by machines nor other means. As a matter of fact, the fundamental nature can only be handled by the body, mind, and intelligence of human beings. This fundamental nature is handled by the Mind Examines Nature method. When the awareness of nature is achieved, the mind is bright. Once enlightened and bright, it immediately sees and knows the Universe. This gives the answer to why science can’t fully understand Buddhism, which is fully aware of science. Science mainly experiments with mechanical implements, while Buddhism utilizes effortful deeds for experimentation. It is this difference that prevents science from fully understanding Buddhism.

Buddhism often says, “Specific form has its shape and color. It must have its age. When the age reaches its limit, the specific form is destroyed and disintegrates. As for the original essential nature, it has no shape or form, but it is immortal.” That is why we rely on two bases for the discussion. If science advances to its utmost, it is destroyed; on the other hand, if Buddhism practices to its utmost, it is enlightened and immortal!

Let’s analyze specific form and fundamental nature to know how they are perceived.

First, let’s look at the tangible: the specific form. Seeing the specific form relies on the existence of a specific form; hearing relies on the existence of an echo or sound; knowing relies on talking. As an example: if the leaves do not wave or fall, or if the human skin is not sensitive, then there is no perception of the wind. If science does not perceive and analyze the specific form, it cannot know what the specific form is. Therefore, seeing and knowing depend on each specific form exclusively.

As far as seeing the fundamental nature, one only needs to look at a specific form to immediately know it comprehensively and thoroughly. One then utilizes this perceived knowledge to nourish the fundamental nature and make his or her knowledge less dependent on forms. Science relies on the specific form, taking the real form as an advanced step. Buddhism utilizes the fundamental nature to absorb the quintessence as a way of practice. For that reason, Buddhism’s seeing is subdivided into five ways of seeing, while science relies on only one.

I. BUDDHISM WITH SCIENCE

I. BUDDHISM WITH SCIENCE

When most people think about it, they believe Buddhism and science to be incompatible. On the contrary, when one achieves full insight into Dharma Tao, there is an immediate realization that science is indeed a part of Buddhism. How can this be so? Buddhism is the attainment of perfect enlightenment involving both humans and the Universe. In fact, scientists are only now realizing some of these truths through research and experimentation, while Buddhism revealed and taught them over 2520 years ago.

The practice of Buddhism involves the self-recognition of one’s nature to become aware of nature. Therefore, Buddhism fully understands the main nature of every erroneous species in the Universe. Buddhism gives answers to why each species was metamorphosed and born and changes in each lifetime. Burdened with that individuality and main nature, each species is metamorphosed, born, and gives rise to many different classes. The truth, though, is that each one should belong to its own class as follows: Humans, Fairy-Deities, and animals and plants all over the lands.

Buddhism clearly defines the original nature of all species. Prior to being erroneous, all species were equally endowed with a uniform original nature that completely embraced every characteristic. Because of their reflective thoughts, desires, and expectations, they behave differently and become dissimilar. It is this dissimilarity that gives rise to the division of high, low, large, and small. As a result, some places become places of gain, loss, good, or bad, and thus there are the Six Tao, which are Human creatures, Fairy-Dragon creatures, Divine creatures, Animals, Hungry Ghosts, and Hell. Once the distinctive formation begins, there are associated memories, classes, and levels. This has led to the caste distinction that is prevalent today. Each person is of his or her own nature, and each species is different from one another—they are metamorphosed and born in such a way.

If science can become aware of the reasoning above, then it will know that every naturally born species consists of main components that contain many sub-ordinary elements. For example: when water is the main substance, air, fire, salt, and sugar have already existed in water; as for earth, if it is the main substance, it has water, air, fire, and all other substances as its sub-ordinary elements. Buddhism previously said that before humanity or other species were formed, there was the complete origination, which comprehensively and equally embraced every nature; it is called the essential nature of the original truth. This essential nature of the original truth is of value beyond measure. Anyone who realizes this can then use his or her own original nature, which is endowed in human beings, to observe the Universe and to be its master. On the contrary, humanity as a whole behaves in the opposite manner. Rather than comprehensively utilizing one’s infinite natures, people tend to establish only one nature as their own characteristics and then let those main characteristics take control of them. This causes self-metamorphosis and birth into each species. This is why Buddhism says that each main substance contains so many subordinate substances. Science has recognized this, but can science comprehend the above reasoning?

Science looks at the Universe through the knowledge that the Universe is related to many scientific discoveries and is full of unknowns and mystery. Science also looks at human beings and admits that humankind’s essential nature is very scientific. On account of that, science aims at a glorious objective in the future. Many scientists strongly believe that a human can become a supreme being through knowing how to utilize his or her body and mind properly. Scientists engage themselves in studies and make use of their intelligence for research along with experimentation to reach that end; however, they can only attain a metaphysical level.

As far as human beings are concerned, why is humanity supreme? By the above explanation, humans are endowed completely with the original essence, which is otherwise called the fundamental nature. This fundamental nature is quintessential, clairvoyant, and immortal; it can comprehensively manage its subordinate substances completely. For that reason, when a person is noble and clear-minded, he or she turns toward a fine substance. From fine substance, one is compatible with space, and thus his or her thoughts are light and flowing. In contrast, when one is born among ordinary people or immersed in depraved and accumulated karma, one utilizes his or her given fine substance to practice. As a result, he or she can be metamorphosed and born to the Fairy-Deity’s plane or to another higher or lower land (among the Six Tao), which depends on his or her level of training in the absorption of the fine substance to begin the formation.

Science used the modern technologies to collect the primary element of fire, which is also a fine substance to make electrical energy. Science examines and formulates the primary elements of each substance, which are called the original substances. Each primary element of the specific substance has its subordinate elements, which are also called the original substances.

The Meditation Master Bodhisattva Di Như. The First Inherited Patriarch

In the 20th century, it is only the Buddhist path that supremely penetrates science. It is difficult to understand and hard to realize this statement. Why? Because scientific experimentation is based on concrete things and the combination of chemical substances; the variation makes up every subject and branch, and they all provide convincing substantiation to all human worlds through their justification and tangible proofs. As for Buddhism, once the Buddhist practitioner has acquired his or her intelligent and practiced attestation, he or she is fully aware of the truth of the above words. Only Buddhism supremely understands science, though there is no substantial justification for it yet. The Supreme Maitreya Buddha wrote the Sutra Buddhism With Science on August 26th, 1976 (lunar calendar).
